Arriva Stowaway Tandem

The Arriva Stowaway, featuring Santana's patented oval couplers on the bottom tube, breaks down to fit into either two S&S suitcases or into Santana's rolling travel case ($950). The Santana case has five layers of foam separating all the parts—no tedious wrapping of each tube with pipe insulation. Santana says its case fits on baggage belts and usually escapes oversize charges, but unless you have a superlight tandem, the bike in the case will probably exceed 50 pounds.

The Arriva is built with Columbus chromoly steel and comes outfitted with a 30-speed drivetrain with a 34/30 low gear, a Tamer suspension seatpost for stoker comfort, a carbon fork and 32-spoke wheels guaranteed for two years against problems. The Arriva also features the option of Santana's massive 255mm rear disc brake, a $300 upgrade, for safer descents.
