BMC: Shiver FSW 01
Using computer software called Dream Cycle, a BMC dealer can spec a bike to your choice. As you pick parts, the program tallies the weight and price. In four days, the complete bike (starting as low as $2,895) is at the shop.
In the case of the FSW01, your base is a beautiful and unique frame. The rear triangle connects to the front at a dog-bone link above the bottom bracket and via the rocker link about halfway up the seat tube. The extra vertical section on the rear triangle, which BMC calls Twistah Legs, provides a very stiff, responsive rear end, and the company's SCC (Skeleton Crosslock Concept), the junction between the seat tube, seatstays and top tube, allows for welding at a 45-degree angle, which results in stronger joints.
Our test bike came with an easy-to-adjust RockShox Reba fork and an Ario 2.2 shock tuned for lighter riders. Both ends of the bike offer 100mm of travel and lockout. BMC's Advanced Pivot System (APS) is designed to isolate the suspension from pedaling forces without compromising small-bump sensitivity. During testing the Shiver offered the full benefit of smooth travel and didn't bob under pedal load, even when I was standing or sprinting. It's an excellent climber, proving itself on the rock-littered trails around our Pennsylvania headquarters. The Shiver is based on BMC's Fourstroke design, but has a shorter wheelbase and top tube as well as more standover height to accommodate a woman's physiology. The steep, 71-degree head angle makes this bike ideal for fast, aggressive, -performance-oriented cross-country riding, not for casual rides around on recreational trails.
BUY IT IF: You want an aggressive bike for fast terrain
FORGET IT IF: You're already hesitant on steep, rocky descents
